The Long Island Serial Killer
UPDATE
This past week, authorities announced a major update in the Long Island Serial Killer investigation. After years of refusing to release the audio of Shannan Gilbert’s 911 call(s), they did so on May 13th, 2022 during a press conference they had announced the night before.
This was big news, because authorities in Suffolk County had fought against releasing this audio for years, defying several court orders in the process. While I wasn’t surprised to hear the audio, I was surprised to see them release it so suddenly, without consulting members of the Gilbert family or letting them hear it before the rest of the world did.
Back in 2020, I - along with my partners Jesse Pollack and Jeff Adamec - had been tasked by the Gilberts’ lawyer to listen to the audio, enhance it for listening, and transcribe it. We compiled our work and sent it off. Because of the legal constraints that Suffolk County had placed on these audio files, we didn’t release our transcript or the enhanced audio. In fact, we haven’t been able to talk about it publicly.
So now, with the release of this audio, we’ve decided to release our findings in the sake of transparency. There is a lot in this audio to unpack, and we feel like we did our best in transcribing it. Below are links to the press conference and the audio from the 911 call(s), as well as the transcript itself.
